HGV drivers and mobile phone use is a very relevant subject at the moment. The news is filled with reports of drivers casually chatting whilst driving. We don't need to tell you about the worst case scenario when using a mobile phone, but here are a few things you probably didn't know about using a mobile phone whilst driving...

1. Some insurance companies are raising their premiums by as much as 28% for drivers convicted of phone use whilst driving, with some even refusing cover

2. It is illegal to use mobile phones even when stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic

3. The current penalty for using mobile phones whilst driving is 3 points and a £100 fine. This is increasing to 6 points and a £200 fine from the 1st March 2017. If your case goes to court, you could be disqualified from driving and get a maximum fine of £2,500

4. It's not just mobile phones - drivers have been stopped by the police for reading books, eating cereal and shaving!

5. Employers can be prosecuted if they ask their employees to make or receive calls whilst driving

6. Hands-free kits aren't necessarily the solution - if you're on a call, chances are you're not paying attention. Plan journeys so they include rest stops when you can check your messages and return calls

7. Headphones are not illegal but if the police see them as a distraction whilst driving, you will be penalised accordingly for careless driving - don't take the chance

Simple solution... Don't use a mobile phone whilst driving!
