Four Stena Line fuel efficient RoPax ferries are currently under construction for use on the Irish Sea Belfast routes in 2019/2020.
The new vessels will provide increased capacity and quality of service on the Belfast routes, supported by the recent investment in the expanding Belfast port hub.
Stena Line have seen a steady growth in freight and passenger volumes over the last few years and the additional larger ferries will help greatly to handle this increase.
"During the last few years we have seen a steady growth in freight and passenger volumes and we believe this will continue. Last year was a record year for us when we for the first time carried over 500,000 freight units through Belfast Port. These new vessels will be the largest ferries ever to operate between Belfast and Great Britain."
said Stena Line’s CEO Niclas Mårtensson.
Belfast Harbour has worked closely with Stena Line to introduce benefits to both the harbour and the economy of Northern Ireland.
The new vessels will be among the most fuel efficient in the world with approximately 25% lower CO2 emissions and designed in such a way that they can be adapted to use natural gas in the future.
