From Thursday 15th June, mobile roaming fees in the EU will be abolished with your regular allowance now available to be used anywhere in the EU.

This is great news for truck drivers and couriers crossing into Europe as it now means that your calls, texts and internet browsing will be charged at your standard domestic rate, rather than the additional charges which currently apply in the EU.

According to the official EU press release

"Consumers will be able to use their mobile device when travelling in the EU, paying the same prices as at home, ie to "Roam like at Home". Any voice call, SMS and data session made while travelling abroad in the EU will be deducted from the monthly package of minutes, SMS and data in the home country with no extra charges."

Out Of Bundle Charges

As a EU regulation, mobile network providers have no choice but to abolish the additional roaming charges. However, it is worth being aware that if you exceed your included minutes, data and texts whilst abroad, your 'out of bundle' charges will still apply.

Countries Included

The new EU regulation includes the European Economic Area which on top of the EU countries also includes Switzerland, the Channel Islands, Iceland, the Isle of Man and Lichtenstein. All of these countries will be offering free roaming.

In addition, Vodafone will also be including Turkey, whilst the Three network also includes the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Macau, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Israel.

It is worth noting that anyone on Pay As You Go with O2 will still have to pay roaming charges for the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Monaco and Switzerland. O2 pay monthly customers will not.
