Brittany Ferries has announced that it is adding a new LNG-powered ferry to it's current fleet of 10 ships.

The new £175m, 42,400 tonne vessel named Honfleur will operate on Brittany Ferries' busiest route between Portsmouth and Caen from 2019.

Named after the port town in Northern France, the new ferry will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which means it will be one of the most environmentally friendly vessels to operate on the English Channel route. The Honfleur will also be the world's first passenger ferry to feature on board cranes for lifting the LNG containers into a fixed position.

Brittany Ferries have recently invested heavily in LNG technology with a €90 million investment in sulfur and particulate-reducing 'scrubber' technology already retrofitted onto six of their existing ships.

President of Brittany Ferries, Jean-Marc Roué, said 

"The significant investment we are making reflects our on-going commitment to developing the regions in which we operate, to linking people and to reducing the environmental impact of our ships. Despite the challenges of Brexit we remain confident in the future and our first new ship since the delivery of Armorique in 2009, with a budget of around £175 million, underlines this resolve."

At over 187 metres long, Honfleur will have 2,600 lane metres of vehicle capacity and will be capable of carrying 130 freight trailers (or 550 cars and 64 freight trailers) and up to 1680 passengers with 257 cabins, two cinemas, restaurants, boutiques and large passenger lounges.
