DFDS have announced that they will be chartering a new ship from Stena RoRo to operate on the English Channel from 2021.

The new ferry will be specifically designed for the Channel services with 3,100 lane metres for HGVs and space for 1,000 passengers. Approximately 1.2 million trucks travel between Dover - Calais and Dover - Dunkerque with DFDS every year.

Testing to influence the design of the new vessel has already begun with four DFDS captains recently running simulator tests to make sure that the new ship is fitted out for the conditions. Modifications have been made to increase speed and maneuverability.

In addition to English Channel specific features, the new ferry will be highly efficient and environmentally friendly.

A newbuild ship will give us the flexibility to make room for tax-free shopping, depending on the outcome of Brexit. The current plan is for the new vessel to replace Calais Seaways, which was built in 1991. The final deployment plan will be announced in 2020.
